Name indexes

A name index is a novel way of dealing with the many inconsistencies in the name, age and birthplace census data, bringing together possible matches in a way that is more effective than the search facilities available on other census websites. (These inconsistencies are discussed in detail elsewhere.)

The buttons provide various selections to be made to create a name index:

Surnames beginning with a chosen letter
Single surname
List of similarly sounding surnames, allowing for common differences in spelling such as Allaway, Alleway and Alloway
Surnames matching a single surname using Soundex or Metaphone codes
Complete enumeration districts
A single street name, or a group of streets
A single County, or a group of Counties
The Henley Union Workhouse

Name indexes are grouped by last name and then by first name, birth year and place of birth. For each name, birth year and birth place combination a link is placed in a year column.

Click on a link to display all members of the household.

Entries with slightly different birth years should be close to each other and matches of birth places makes partial matches of names and birth year more plausible. Appearance in a single year column rules out possible matches of similar name, birth year and birth place combinations, but appearance in different adjacent year columns suggest the possibility that these possible matches refer to a single person.

Note that in 1901 the districts were reorganised. Also the area South of Friday Street experienced considerable growth with the original simgle district becoming two districts in 1891 and then three districts in 1901.
